Electro Avenue caught up with the analogue virtuoso as he talked about his roots and what makes him tick.

‘In the mid eighties when still in secondary school, I Was a regular at Groove Records  buying electro and hip-hop imports every week with my Paper round earnings and pocket money.  I’ve still got most of all the records i bought back then and added a lot more over the years.

I was brought up around music and was always into sound and recording as my Dad was a Projectionist and mad on films and sound tracks.  He always had the latest Stereo system.   We actually had an early surround sound system in our house in the late eighties as surround sound featured on some of the Warner VHS Videos that you could rent out of your video shop.’

‘I bought two Technics 1200′s and a mixer when at school and was into the hip hop electro scene and got right into scratching and breaks.  I played at parties, entered the DMC mixing contest got through to a regional final but never made it to the UK Final.  I did win a mixing competition Dave Pearce’s ‘Fresh Start To the Week’ on GLR. That was cool as Chuck D from Public Enemy, Russell Simmons and 3rd Bass were all in the studio the night I was there!’

‘I started to buy analog gear in the late to mid 90′s as I wanted to produce my own music and it was the only real way to do it back then. There were no plugins available like there are today.  I used Cubase on the Atari to midi trigger the instruments and experimented and worked with various people but nothing solid ever really materialised.   It’s just as well I bought a lot of my analog gear back then as the prices are crazy nowadays!’

‘I took a few years out and came back four years ago with a decision to keep an all analog approach and work on my sound and production .  I like the analog way as I feel at home with it.  Not just because I love the sound – I don’t like to stare at screens all day like you do with plugins, and being able to move real sliders and turn real knobs and having real electricity running through your gear is cool!!’
